Cathartic collage, created from fabrics and thread scraps depicts just some of my experience with cancer in the head and neck area. Having refused to own this disease and convinced that this was a temporary illness and sent to teach me a lesson, I concentrated on healing each day
The Dark Side
The nails and tacks represent the path of the disease and the mask that is screwed down over your face and shoulders pinning you down through radiotherapy treatment - a bit barbaric springs to mind, and for me, a few minutes of extreme anxiety
The metal spikes also represent my attack, my war. Meditations with my healer friend visualised fights of attacking the C cells. We often ended up in tears of laughter from what was manifested in these sessions. Laughter really is the best medicine
The lips sewn shut– unable to eat and drink through the mouth. A feeding tube in stomach and self-administering liquid feed 3-5 x day was a ritual way scarier than chemo. Talking was often difficult and sometimes impossible – a blessing for some.
The wisps of now emerging grey hair and baldness to come -
not a good look
The Bright Side
My attitude, my healing, recovering, more at peace, now.
This collage was initially inspired by the piece of paper I would draw on every day through treatment, in brightly coloured pencils with messages and love to myself
The cross earring - represents love and victory over death
The orange hair – back at work – hairdressing. My wig I still currently wear, and my own hair underneath now dyed copper and gradually recovering after a year
The hearts and flowers – for all the family friends and clients who gave and continue to give me so much support and love.
Thank you, I love you all
Created from large scraps of materials, scraps of threads, straws, and an unwanted necklace and musical ribbon
Commissions are often undertaken for use of a loved one’s material possessions or passions created in a memory collage
The boho guitar represents Skye, for her love for music, hippy like nature and love for wearing bright colours
Sashiko style - Sashiko is a type of traditional Japanese embroidery or stitching used for the decorative and/or functional reinforcement of cloth and clothing
Used here to bring multiple scraps of denim together
that were destined for landfill
An old cloth bag and bits of leftover embroidery bits that were'nt quite up to standard on other projects. Putting an old dirty canvas into the bag and with some old paintbrushes and a ruler turned all into a piece of fun wall art!
Upcycled from a velvet cushion, a blouse and curtain material offcuts. A white tablecloth and lace offcuts are tea dyed to give a more harmonious colour scheme
All materials re-used are thouroughly washed and further sanitised in a UV steriliser box
All bags have luxurious linings, magnetic closures, pockets
Possibly my favourite to work on just turned out really beautiful, from numerous lace scraps and t shirts tea dyed with pearls. Wonderful textures, visually stunning in real life and a very long time to make!
Cushions, beads, numerous lace and fur scraps brought together this tribal red indian feel crossbody bag.
Shamanic drums, candles, crystals, spiritual type items are often kept safely stored in these type of bags
All bags are unique.
Comissions mean I can use certain requested colours and textures and even some of the same left over materials of an original bag, but will never be able to copy exactly
Lots of bronze colour metal ware and jewellery, tea dyed lace and vegan suede offcuts and ribbons created these lovely natural colour combinations. Great with denim outfits and festivals
